At present there are some beta testing programs going around with Apple and Microsoft releasing public beta for their next Operating Systems updates. Apple for the first time launched iOS public beta with iOS 9. You can install that beta update and check out the new features and provide feedback to Apple. If you want to get hands on iOS 9 beta but not sure how to do it, then read an earlier post on iOS 9 public beta and you will find answers to all questions.
Microsoft is also bringing users to its next OS Windows 10, through Windows Insider Program. With Windows Insider you can test Windows 10 for your PC, laptops, convertibles and even Windows Phone.
With the next OS Windows 10, Microsoft is planning to get one billion devices on Windows 10 in next two to three years. Those are really some big numbers, and to achieve its target Microsoft is giving free upgrade of Windows 10. Yes you heard it right Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 7/8 and 8.1 is totally free. This does sounds really good. You can reserve your copy of Windows 10 now and you will get it for free (download charges will apply). Follow the step mentioned in the earlier article How to Reserve Windows 10 Free Upgrade, the steps are really hassle free and will take only few minutes.
In this post I’ll be showing you how to get yourself register as a Windows Insider and enjoy the preview of Windows 10. Once again like iOS 9 public beta, these technical preview builds are full of bugs and irritations. Before getting into this I will warn you not to install these preview builds on your main device.
With Windows Insider program you can get your hands on Windows 10 for PC as well as mobile. Windows Insider program is already a hit 5 million people around the world are registered in this program and are helping by providing feedback and suggestions to Microsoft for improvements.
Since on 29th July, next week Microsoft is going to release Windows 10, new PCs registration is stopped for now, but for mobile no such restriction is in place.
Steps to register for Windows Insider for Mobile
Open https://insider.windows.com/ click on Get Started tab.
Next page will take you Welcome Page for Insider Program, click on the Phone Tab, and it will take you to the FAQ page for Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview. I would suggest you to read, before moving further which will clear any doubts regarding this, still if you don’t want its OK, you can just proceed to next step.
You can also directly install the app on phone from Store, just search for Windows Insider and you’ll find the app published by Microsoft.
Once the app is downloaded, go your App List and Open Windows Insider App.
New page will open where you will enroll, here you’ll find two options to select from Insider Slow and Insider Fast.
Insider Fast choose this if you are ready to get your hands on everything new at first. With this you’ll be getting pre-release builds of Windows 10 ahead of everyone else. This means getting your hands on everything sooner. Although getting everything first is good but this also comes with an issue. You may get some bugs for which there will be no immediate solution and you’ll either have to live with that or to roll back to older version.
If you select Insider Slow, you’ll be getting pre-release builds for Windows 10 but a little later than Insider Fast member. This I think is not bad actually for those of you who want a more polished and stable build. Also as you’ll get a more stable release there will be more workarounds for issues and bugs.
Select which ever option you want to, And click the arrow at the bottom of the page to take you to next step.
Next page will show you all the warnings and issues related to Insider Preview, read all and click Accept tab at the bottom of the page.
The app will configure your device and you will see confirmation message for your device being successfully configured for getting update from Insider Fast/Slow.
The device will prompt for reboot, you can manually choose to reboot it then or it will reboot itself.
When the device restarts, Go to Settings>Phone Update and click on check for updates tab. Your phone will check for updates. As your phone is now on Windows Insider Program, you will be get the message to download the latest build for Windows 10. Click on download and sit back and relax. This will take some time to complete.
I myself have both my Lumia 720 and Lumia 630 on Insider Fast, as now the present build 10166 is far more stable and you can read all about in my earlier post of Windows 10 Technical Preview. If you are jumping into testing the new Windows 10, just remember this is still under development OS. You will find some new features pretty amazing like the new browser Microsoft Edge, or the New Notification Centre, but sometimes you’ll also find it irritating to use, app will close, or sometimes won’t open.
Also note that Microsoft is giving the users an option to have their say in this new OS, you don’t forget to give your feedback and also suggestions through Windows Feedback App.
PS : For those who just want to check out new features and don’t want to be bothered about rolling back and forth between OS, I would definitely suggest Insider Slow.
