As most of you know Windows 10 was officially launched on July 29 around the world. Microsoft have big aspirations with Windows 10 to make it reach to every current Windows PC, laptop and tablet around the world. And to achieve that Microsoft is offering Windows 10 as free upgrade for all genuine Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 users. Yes you all read it correct Windows 10 is free. You don’t need to pay anything to upgrade your old PC or laptop to the OS of today.
Those of you who reserved Windows 10 would already have got notification to upgrade from Windows 7; your OS would be downloading already on your system in background. If not sure just open the Get Windows 10 app and you will see this . Once download is complete install the OS and you are good to go. But what about people who have not reserved their Windows 10? How will they get upgraded? Don’t worry folks we are here to help you in simple manner. Just read further and you will be able to enjoy the latest OS from Microsoft.
This free upgrade does come with some terms and conditions but nothing of such kind that you can’t meet them. First one is obvious you have to have a PC or laptop with Windows 7. In addition, it must be updated to Service Pack 1. You can check if Service Pack 1 is available on your system, just use WINDOWS key + R to open Run command, in that just type winver, a new window will open with details.
If SP1 is not installed then you can install it manually from Microsoft support page. Download widows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe and widows6.1-KB976932-X32.exe for Windows 7 64-bit version and 32-bit version respectively. Alternatively you can also install it from Windows Update from your settings menu. When the latest updates are installed make sure Windows Update is enabled, you will see Get Windows 10 app. If you are not getting that, you can force that also; read it here how to do it.
Once you see Get Windows 10 app icon, open it and click the Reserve your free update, enter your email address and you’ll get a confirmation mail, when the OS is ready to install. There is PC check-up tool in Get Windows 10 app , which will check and report any problem with your PC regarding upgrade.
You will get a notification for download of Windows 10 on you PC. Just make sure to make backup all your personal files and also do a system backup in case you want to revert back to Windows 7. Just make sure to have atleast 20GB of space on your PC for installation to complete.
After the download is complete, notification will come for further action. Just accept the terms and conditions or read them if you can ;). Windows setup wizard will give you a pop message saying Your upgrade is ready to install. Click on Start the upgrade now to install or if you want it to install later just schedule the time to upgrade.
