To be secure, modern smartphones have the option of setting up of PIN, Passcode or Pattern Lock. On Android Phones you have the option of setting up PIN or Pattern Lock. Now top end flagships also have finger print scanning.
On iPhones there is an option of setting up PIN. With iPhone 5s, Apple introduced Touch ID for finger print scanning. So what happens if you forget your PIN or enter incorrect PIN? At first you’ll be locked out of the phone for some time once you enter incorrect PIN for six times in a row. This blocks you or someone other trying to access your phone again and again for the said duration of time.
Now the only way to gain access to your device is to reset it. If you have done backup of your device then after reset you can restore all the data, otherwise with this reset you’ll lose everything stored on your device. Apple for security reasons has disabled the way to bypass the PIN and regain access to iPhone or iPad.
Now there are different ways to wipe your device
- Wipe from Find My iPhone
- Wipe from Recovery Mode
- Wipe and restore from an iTunes backup
Wipe from Find My iPhone
To wipe the device using Find My iPhone is easy way to reset, but for this you must have Find My iPhone enabled on your device, if not then do it right now it is a must have.
To enable Find My iPhone, go to Setting > tap iCloud > Find My iPhone/iPad slider to ON. Now to wipe the phone using this, login to Find My iPhone with your iCloud id and password.
On top of the page you’ll see All Devices dropdown, select the iPhone or iPad you want to erase, click the ERASE button. This will wipe down your device remotely and you could be able to restore the device from iCloud backup or set up as a fresh device.
Wipe from Recovery Mode
Second option is to use Recovery Mode, this option works is to be used if you do not have any backup of your iPhone or iPad and also do not have Find My iPhone/iPad turned on.
Connect your device with PC or Mac with iTunes installed on it and open iTunes. Next, press and hold the Power and Home button simultaneously. This will restart the phone forcibly, do not leave the buttons. Even when the Apple logo comes up keep holding the buttons until recovery screen comes up which will show an iTunes logo and image of cable.
The iTunes on your computer will show you a message of “There is a problem with the iPhone that requires it to be updated or restored.” Now you just click on RESTORE, and your device will be restored to factory settings.
Once the device is wiped cleaned you can set up the device as new otherwise you can restore from iCloud backup if backup was done previously.
Wipe and restore from an iTunes backup
Next method is to restore the device using iTunes. Connect your device to the computer you synced with, Open iTunes. If it prompts for passcode try another computer with which you have synced your device, if not then use the second option using recovery Mode.
If the iTunes doesn’t ask for passcode, open the device summary page and wait for iTunes to sync and make backup.
After the device sync and backup are finished click on the RESTORE your device. During set up of your device tap Restore from iTunes backup, select your device in iTunes and select your recent backup to restore to your device.
These methods will work with for all iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch.
