Girls! A new movie is out there which celebrates you. Now producer Lesley Chilcott has made a brilliant documentary “Codegirl” in which she covers a tech tournament Technovation. Technovation is a tech tournament which challenges girls all over the world to build a mobile app that will address a community problem.
Technovation was founded in 2009. Since 2010, nearly 5,000 girls from 30 countries have submitted to Technovation, thanks to dedicated volunteers around the world. To participate girls do not need to have programming experience. And what better Technovation is free for any girl who wants to participate. Technovation grants two $10,000 prizes each year – one to girls 14yr and younger, another for girls ages 14yr – 19yr; this is some inspiration and motivation.
In this challenge high school girls from around the world design an app which solves a problem in their community. Codegirl movie was released yesterday and you’ll be able to stream the movie for free on YouTube from November 1st to November 5th. After 5th Nov the movie will be available on-demand services like Google Play, iTunes and Amazon Instant Video.
Partnering with FilmBuff for distribution, Chilcott also partnered with Google. The tech company which last year launched Made with Code program to encourage more and more girls into computer science. The company by showing the movie for free on YouTube is trying to make more girls see “Codegirl” for inspiration.
According to a study about 21 percent of computer programmer in U.S . last year. Susan Wojcicki, CEO YouTube said about the film :
“CODEGIRL” follows the story of 5,000 girls from 60 countries as they compete in a global entrepreneurship and coding competition by Technovation. The girls have three months to develop an app that attempts to solve a problem in their local community. In the film, they size up their competition, interact with teachers and local mentors, learn to code, and pitch their ideas all in hopes of winning $10,000 in funding and support.
She also says :
“Girls don’t see positive role models of other girls and women in popular culture. In a study of popular films in 11 countries, fewer than 20 percent of computer science or tech roles were held by women.”
As you know as smartphones and tablets market is increasing so is the app market. The app market is expected to reach $77 Billion by 2017 but 80 percent of the app market is dominated by men, and this is just a step to motivate as many as to get into the game.
So girls what are you waiting for? Just grab your laptops or tablets and get ready to be truly inspired. I am also planning to watch it, do watch it and tell us what you think of the movie.
