Cortana, the personal assistant from Microsoft which first came to the world on Windows Phone is now available for iOS and Android phone users. With Cortana, Microsoft is aiming to achieve something big. After Windows Phone release in beta form the virtual assistant was released for Windows 10 which means you can use it on your PC and laptops. Few month back Microsoft released beta testing apps for iOS and Android of its personal assistant. Now last week on December 9th Microsoft announced that it has officially launched the app for iOS, Android and Cyanogen OS which powers One Plus One.
Feature wise Cortana is pretty rich and you can do some amazing things with it. Here is a list of features which you can use with it:
Location based reminders: With this you can set reminder on one device and the same will pop up on your smartphone when you arrive at the location. Say you can set reminder to pick up eggs and breads when you are near grocery store and Cortana will remind you on your phone when you are at that location.
Missing calls not an issue: With Cortana app you can get notified of any miss calls on your Windows 10 powered PC. You can type text message to the caller from your PC and the SMS will be sent from your phone to the caller.
Tracking travel Plan: With Cortana app you can track your flights, packages on both your PC and phone. With this you’ll be able to track and not miss any important information.
Cortana on your phone is the same intelligent virtual assistant which you use on your PC. It has the same Notebook where it stores information about your interests, weather, news and more so it can serve you better. This same Notebook follows you everywhere on each device and any changes done will be reflected on all devices.
With Cyanogen, Microsoft has entered partnership, which gives Cortana some bonus features as compared to the app on iOS and Android. For Cyanogen, Cortana would be available later in December first on One Plus One with 220.127.116.11 update with other Cyanogen phones getting the update early next year. Cyanogen users will get the additional feature of using “Hey Cortana” from any screen which is not possible on other Android versions. This custom integration in Cyanogen allows Cortana with the ability to toggle network modes, power down your phone, and turn on Quiet Mode. With Quiet Mode enabled, all notifications, calls and alarms will be silenced.
The app is available for download from App store and Play Store for US and China customers. To use Cortana you need to have iOS 8 and up on your device and Android 4.1.2. To use “Hey Cortana” voice activation you need to be on Android home screen or in the app. There are some feature differences in the app on each platform due to restriction on APIs, say like on iOS devices you cannot use hands free Hey Cortana feature.
So what you think of Microsoft’s personal assistant coming to your Android and iOS devices, will you be using it on your phones to work better in integration with your Windows 10 PCs ?
