Pebble has already made a name in the wearable market with its super battery life e-ink display smartwatches. Pebble has now recently launched its third project on Kickstarter with two new heart-rate enabled smartwatches along with Android-powered wearable button device. The two watches are Pebble 2 and Time 2, priced at $99 and $169 respectively, but the most interesting announcement from Pebble is the wearable button device which the company is calling as Pebble Core.
Pebble Core is the first product from the company which is not a smartwatch, plus it runs on Android and is compatible with Android and iOS devices. The new device is GPS powered and has optional 3G capability.
Another cool feature which makes the case for Pebble Core stronger is its recently acquired support for Amazon’s Alexa. Today in a blog post it was announced that the new device will be the first wearable device to have integrated voice services from Amazon Alexa. Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky said :
Experiencing Amazon Alexa on-the-go right from Pebble Core is game-changing for wearable technology. We’re long-time fans of the powerful voice services Alexa delivers, and it only gets smarter and more useful over time. It’s an approach we embrace with our own products.
With the newly acquired power of Alexa, Pebble Core will be able to play songs, provide current news, weather update and even will be able to control smart home devices. Steve Rabuchin, Vice President, Amazon Alexa said:
The integration of Amazon Alexa into Pebble Core is exciting to see. By making Alexa Voice Services available for free to device makers and developers, we knew there would be no limit to the innovative uses.
With Pebble Core, runners will have the ability to run without their smartphones in pocket and still be able to collect all the data with the new device. The device is small, can be easily clipped and allows for data collection while running along with its pretty cheap price. Pebble Core supports Wi-Fi via which running data can be synced with other apps like Runkeeper, Strava and Under Armour Record.
The device is a tiny hackable android computer that can be used as a magic button for anything. Well, there are two buttons on the device one large and one small, both these buttons can be customized for performing specific tasks.
Now a days people like to listen to their music while doing workouts, Pebble Core checks that box also. It has got a 3.5mm jack for earphones, don’t like wired earphones don’t worry you can use Bluetooth headphones with Pebble Core. The wearable device has got 4GB of internal storage, you can sync 500-100 songs over Wi-Fi with the device.
Pebble has come up with the partnership with Spotify for Pebble Core which will allow the device to play your Spotify playlist. However, this service will work for Spotify Premium only. Remember one thing, to stream Spotify playlist Pebble Core will need to have its own SIM card. The 3G capability given to the new device a smart edge and you can call it a modern iPod Shuffle.
Not only Pebble Core is a health wearable device, the GPS tracking gives the new device some additional functionalities. You can use it as a tag in a keychain, bags or even tag it on your kids school bag and it turns into a kid tracker device, the opportunities are endless where you can use Pebble Core.
Pebble core measures 40x40mm and is 20mm thick, it weighs just 50g so you won’t feel any uneasiness while wearing it. As for the battery life on the device it is expected to be around 9 to 10 hours, the device will also have wireless charging capability.Pebble core will sell at a retail price of $99 but if you buy it now from the Kickstarter project page it is priced at $69. The device will start shipping from January 2017 and will come in two colours black and white.
I feel the device is pretty interesting with its feature set and with power of Alexa it is a steal deal at the offered price. Already Pebble got a huge response for its new announcement on Kickstarter. Let’s hope the company is able to keep its promise of releasing the device to customers on time and it works good as advertised.
