Remember the movie Wall-E; it is one of my favorite of all time, those of you who have missed this masterpiece should watch it as and when time permits. The movie was a love story not of humans but of robots, based on future of a human world where robots do all the work of humans other than doing rest 😉 . Even the task of finding back the life form on earth was done by a robot: EVE.
The main character of the movie was Wall-E and Eve was his love for whom he ventured into an unknown territory. While Wall-E was a simple waste collecting robot, Eve was more of a modern day robot made to scan things, has sophisticated systems in place to find life and was more polished looking. The love story between Wall-E and Eve decided the fate of human life in the movie. As of now our fate is not in the hands of robots but in today’s time robots are moving into our homes into our life like iRobot’s Braava Jet , Puma’s BeatBot, Segway Robot and Domino’s pizza delivery robot.
Asus is making a move into entering home robot space with Eve type robot for our homes. At Computex event held last month, many products were launched by the company but the most intriguing is a small robot named ZENBO. Zenbo has got wheels which allow for free and independent movement for the robot and this allows the robot to follow you anywhere and assist.
The company is putting special emphasis on the robot’s ability to help elderly people. In the promo video, Zenbo reminds the grandfather to take medicines, calls his grandson and when the old man fell down it does the emergency calling to the other family members. Check out the video below and you can see how capable Asus is trying to make the robot. With natural voice commands, Zenbo will be able to tell stories to children take pictures and provide you with a delicious recipe for having a great family dinner.
With Zenbo Asus is trying to one up, Amazon’s Echo speaker with Alexa. Amazon has made Alexa an always hearing speaker which follows your command but from one place, with Zenbo there is no such limitation. It will be able to follow you around the house and will be always present to assist.
In the promo video, you can see that robot works in natural voice commands. The face of Zenbo is connected with a connected arm to the orb; the face of the robot is an oval shaped screen. The screen will show the eyes and mouth of the robot and will also display notifications. The screen contains a camera which is able to detect faces, take pictures and videos. With Zenbo’s touchscreen face you’ll be able to shop online and watch video content online.
With Zenbo, Asus is making steps to get the robot to connect to home appliances both traditional and smart home devices to control them. Asus says Zenbo will be able to provide voice reminders to users. With Zenbo’s inbuilt camera you can control and check out your home while away. Some of the capabilities are built in with Zenbo like library of children’s books, interactive games and also includes an encyclopedia.
Asus has already launched the developer program, which will allow for apps development for Zenbo. Zenbo is priced at $599 which is pretty cheap considering the capabilities for this home robot.
What will make Zenbo succeed in the market will be the apps developers create for this cute robot. The future of our home automation seems pretty interesting and exciting; soon we may have our own personal robot assistants and that day can’t come any sooner.
