Ever since Xiaomi has come to the market front, the company has been able to surprise the world with its offerings. For some of you who don’t know about Xiaomi, it is a China-based smartphone manufacturer known for its high spec low price phones. The company has seen some good success in China and India market of late.
The phone manufacturing market is unforgiving in today’s time, one slip and you are looking at winding down your business. But Xiaomi has been able to make its mark with its offering, last year it was Mi4 and Mi4i, this year company has launched Mi5. But not only phones, the company is looking to diversify itself into other tech related fields as well.
The company launched a transformer tablet toy, not only that the company has been shown off internet-connected home appliances: air purifiers, wearables and electric kettle. Impressed! There is more, Xiaomi is vying for more, back in May this year company launched Mi Drone at just $450. So you can see although primarily a smartphone manufacturer and other services at the core of its business, the company is not afraid to tread unknown waters. Continuing its tradition of increasing products in Xiaomi’s Mi Ecosystem, the company is now bringing a new product: a foldable electric bicycle.
The new bicycle Mi QiCycle is priced at 2,999 Yuan or approximately $450, which is just a fraction of price which customers pay for similar kind of bicycle. The bicycle is powered by a 250W 36V electric motor with Torque Measurement Method (TMM) to assist pedal power of the rider. Once the speed is set by the user, the TMM uses sensors to optimize your energy output and the bike will tell how hard the user needs to pedal.
The bicycle has a Panasonic battery which gives the bicycle range on 45kms on a single charge; the bicycle also has 3-speed gears which give the user ability to continue using even after the battery runs out.
Now as with most things released nowadays, this new Mi QiCycle is a smart bicycle, which can connect with your phone via a companion app. There is also a display on the handlebar which shows time, distance travelled, speed, dynamic power and also battery status. It also allows the users to toggle between various modes: fitness, power-saving, balanced and extra power. The app for the bicycle has GPS navigation, gives your ride status, calories burned and more.
Now most other electric bicycles will have all or some of these features, so what is that which makes Xiaomi’s offering differing from the rest. The Mi QiCycle weighs just 14.5kg, also the biggest plus this bicycle offers is that it’s foldable. And this foldable feature makes this a compelling offering in current day scenarios of traffic filled modern cities. When done riding just fold the bicycle, carry it on your shoulder and move on; no need to look for parking spots and wait long lines in traffic lights.
The bicycle is launched as of now in China only, Xiaomi has not announced if and when it will be available outside China. If the bicycle comes to other countries as well, it could definitely change the way travelling for some, with no pollution generation and easy to fold and carry feature Mi QiCycle could become the first device to bring the much needed change, till that time comes we have to wait and see.
