In today’s day and time lives have become extremely fast and to not be left behind in the race we need to be connected to outside world. Our devices need to be smart and with technology advancing our phones, watches, homes, music systems, cars all are becoming smart so why not personal care devices.
What is Withings Thermo?
At CES this year Withings showcased its smart thermometer — Thermo, what a smart thermometer! Yes, the French company has made a smart device to measure body temperatures. The best part of the new device is you need not place in mouth or under armpits, just place the thermometer on the forehead and done. The device can be connected to a smartphone via an app. In the Thermo app, you can create a profile for each of your family member, where it keeps a record of the temperature measured by Thermo.
This helps in checking out for how long the person is down with fever and also allows checking if fever is coming down. Setting up a profile is simple just enter the name, age, height weight for family members. All these things are taken into consideration by Thermo to provide feedback if the measured temperature is fever or not.
How Withings Thermo works?
Withings has used 16 infrared sensors in Thermo which take around 4,000 readings in just two seconds from the temporal artery running through the forehead. To measure the body temperatures press the button on the device and place the green end over the centre of the forehead and sweep toward the temple. The device will vibrate twice indicating the measurement is done.
Before providing the final temperature readings Thermo uses an algorithm and take factors like room temperature for calculation. With basic touch functionality, you can choose the name of the family member by swiping up and down on the Thermo’s display. With the user name selected, the device will light a LED next to the temperature reading. A green light means nothing to worry; a yellow indicates elevated temperatures, while the red indicator means ‘consult doctor immediately’.
The readings on the device are displayed by white LEDs on white display making it easy to read both at night and in bright daylight. The device uses two AAA batteries and runs for two years before the need to change the batteries. With its haptic feedback when taking measurements the device is easy to use even in self-administering cases. For using Thermo app you need to have iOS 8 or higher, and Android 5.0 or higher on your smartphone.
Is Withings Thermo worth buying?
For parents and professionals dealing with infants and small children who do not stay still Thermo is a dream device. Even when the children are sleeping the temperature can be measured without the need to wake them up. With no parts going in the mouth or under armpits, the device takes a totally hygienic approach towards temperature measurement.
Withings Thermo has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as Class IIa medical device which means Thermo is not only safe to use but also provides consistently precise measurements.
The device is available for purchase in the U.S. at a price tag of $99.50 while in the U.K it is available at a price of £89.95 on Withings.com. The device is also available exclusively on Apple’s website in the US, UK, Germany, France and Ireland.
