Portable USB monitors are a good addition to have the second screen, but they never became popular as much companies would have liked. Now ASUS is trying to make all that change with its new ZenScreen. The ASUS ZenScreen is a 15.6” Full HD display that was first showcased by ASUS at IFA last year.
The new ASUS ZenScreen is just 8mm thick and weighs in at just 780 grams, thus provides the portability needed for its users. Well, the ZenScreen is not a touch screen and is one of the reasons ASUS could keep the size and weight on the small side of the scales.
The screen comes with a 16:9 aspect ratio and has the capability to be used in landscape or portrait mode. The screen has the capability to identify in which position it is being used. The ZenScreen comes with its own protective case which also doubles up as stand for the ZenScreen.
With ZenScreen, ASUS has done a good job of keeping the size of the device on the lower side of the scale. The bezels on the new screen are at just 6.5mm which is neat, the lower side of the screen has a bit bigger bezel but that is ok as it contains the power and menu button. There is also a hole in the lower right corner of the screen which can be used to prop up the screen using a pen if you want to ditch the screen cover.
The screen has a USB Type-C port to connect with your device. The ZenScreen uses this single port for power and video transmission. The USB port on the ZenScreen supports DisplayPort over USB-C along with USB 3.0 Type-A. For the USB 3.0 Type-A usage, ASUS is putting in the USB-C to USB0-A cable and driver.
The new screen from ASUS has support for features like timer, alignment grid, photo modes, and crosshair. The device has a refresh rate of 60Hz, the brightness of 220 cd/m2 with a contrast ratio of 800:1. ASUS has also integrated a blue light filter setting which allows making the screen sleep-friendly at night.
The new ZenScreen is expected to be priced at $249 which is nice pricing point by ASUS. I really like the idea of this portable screen and would be looking to get my hands on one of these.
